Handful of Hope promotes resilience in children through partnering with parents. Parents are given the tools they need to effectively teach their children skills that boost their ability to thrive and bounce back from challenges stronger than before. The emphasis is on doing the learning activities together so your family has fun as you learn the skills.
Handful of Hope is designed for you to customize the program to fit the ages and interests of your children. Families with children from ages 4 to 18 have found Handful of Hope helpful.
Handful of Hope is unique because it is a home-based resilience program. There are some resilience programs that are taught in schools, but HofH teaches parents how to effectively teach their children skills to boost resilience. Many parenting courses teach parents ways to discipline or co-parenting ideas for divorcing parents. HofH takes a different approach by offering fun, hands-on learning activities for the entire family. Many parents tell us as they do the activities together as a family, the need to discipline is reduced because the entire family is working on a positive skill.
Handful of Hope does not fulfill court-required classes for parents. However, if you and your partner are separating or if there is another court-involved situation, it is stressful for everyone involved, including your children. HofH is a way to structure positive times with your children and learn resilience skills together. Who doesn’t need resilience when dealing with a divorce or stressful family situation?
Many very contentious parents have used Handful of Hope and they have told us they appreciate having something scientifically-based to teach their family. Parents work very hard to teach their children skills that will help them be successful in life. HofH adds to your efforts by giving you research-based skills without you spending hours and hours doing comprehensive research.
As a parent, your time is precious. The 10-20 minutes you spend each week preparing helps you incorporate the skill so you are better able to teach it to your family. Then the family activity (where you teach the skill) is usually about 30 to 45 minutes a week. We also give you tools to easily incorporate additional skill-building activities and questions when you are in the car or at the dinner table. If you want to spend more time on a concept, there are plenty of extra activities to reinforce the ideas too.
